Outsoles of footwear or other flexing components may suffer cracking in use due to flexing. Cracks usually develop at points of high surface strain resulting from the design of the sole pattern, without there being any cuts to initiates them. The Belt Flex Tester is designed to flex complete sales with their patterns intact in a manner similar to those encountered in actual use. Tests carried out using it provide a guide to the risk of such cracks developing during use. The test specimens are attached to the outside of a continuous belt, which is driven around two rollers. The large roller drives the belt while movement of the smaller roller is chosen to make the flexing somewhat more severe than is actual use. This form of flexing also closely simulates the actual bending at each step as it produces a short period of rapid flexing followed by a longer period when the specimen is not being flexed. A normal test consist of a number of flexing runs up to a total of 50,000 flexes, with an examination for cracking at the end of each run.The Belt Flex Tester consists of two roller on which a flat belt moves. The larger roller which is the driving roller rotates at a specified speed to give the specified frequency of flexing with the help of an electric motor and V-belt arrangement. The second roller, which is the flexing roller, rotates with the movement of the belt.The flexing rollers are slightly barrel-shaped so as to minimize sideways movement of the belt. A hand wheel is attached to the front end of these rollers to enable the belt to be moved by hand. The equipment is supplied with three flexing rollers, one for normal sales, the second for very flexible soles, and the third for very rigid soles.

The distance between the driving and the flexing rollers can adjust with the help of a screw arrangement to enable the belt to be mounted over different flexing rollers and to allow for small differences in belt length. This is done by turning a hand wheel on the side of the tester.The tester is fitted with an acrylic front cover and a wire mesh safety guard, which allows adequate circulation of cooling air around the test specimens during the test. For the safety of the user, the motor can be started only when the cover is closed.

Bennewart Flex Tester is intended to determine the resistance of a component of material to cut growth during repeated flexing. It can also be used to assess the effect of surface patterns on crack initiation and growth. This test is especially applicable to the outsoles of footwear, but may also be used with certain other flexible components.The Bennewart Flex Tester consists of a drive unit comprising an electric motor with pulleys and belts and link mechanism to give an oscillating movement to one of the two grips holding the two ends of the test specimen, the other grip being fixed.The oscillating grip has gun metal bushes, which slides on two hardened and ground bearing steel rods to give it a long working life. Each grip consists of swayable bases pivoted on ball bearings so that the two ends of the test specimen are free to align themselves with the natural contour of the specimen during flexing. The axis about which the grip bases oscillate life. A six digit pre-set electronic digital counter the numbers of test cycles and also stops the motor after pre-set numbers of test cycles. The apparatus is finished in gray hammer tone shaving, painting, and bright chrome/ zinc plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish. A cutting dies for the preparation of test specimen from the sheet and sitting punch with a jig for making initial crack are available as optional accessories.

ASIAN Sole Adhesion Tester is used for the sole adhesion of the footwear.  The system consists of a spring dynamometer to indicate the load applied at the junction of the sole and the upper, a lever arrangement to transmit the load exerted on the toe piece to the spring dynamometer, a straight edge fulcrum for resting the shoe on during the test, and a set of interchangeable toe pieces having different curvature. The spring dynamometer indicates the load applied on the joint directly in kilograms, taking into account the mechanical advantage of the lever transmitting the force from the toe piece to it. The load is indicated on a circular dial. The dynamometer has two pointers, a black powder to indicate the instantaneous load acting on the toe piece and a red dummy pointer to indicate the maximum load applied before failure of adhesion. The toe piece is five in number and having a different curvature to enable toes and heels of different shapes and sizes to be tested. The length of the arc of each toe piece, however, is the same to ensure that the load is applied only to a fixed length of joint. They are made from carbon steel for giving a long operational life. Any one of the toe pieces can be held in the equipment at one time. The fulcrum on which the shoe is placed during the test has an adjustable height to enable soles of different thickness to be tested. The height of the fulcrum is adjusted with the help of spacer strips provided with the instrument. The instrument is finished in painting and bright chrome plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish.
